Wishing every mother out there a heartfelt Happy Mother’s Day as we all continue our struggle for more freedom.
Today is Mother’s Day where everybody gets to wax sentimental about the relationship between them and their mothers, and to recognize all the hard work, dedication, and influence that mothers have on all of our lives. While being a parent of any kind is difficult to navigate, there is one class of mothers who have the highest bar to leap even when compared to the challenges that motherhood in general presents: Single mothers.Â Single parenthood is on the rise with the vast majority of these families being single mother families, millions of which are living in poverty. This represents a massive loss in opportunity to millions of people across the country, the effects of which will be seen by us all socially and economically down the line.
The breakdown goes a little like this:
– 1 in 3 children, a total of 15 million, are being raised without a father (82.2% of single parent families ). Of that group, half live below the poverty line.
– Half of single mother families have an annual income less than $25,000. Median income for single mother families ($25,353) is only one third the median for married couple families ($78,699)
