Get a Jump on Spring Gardening with DIY Seed Starting Materials and This Handy Planting Chart

Justin Gardner | FreeThoughtProject

With the new year in full swing, vegetable gardeners are already thinking about what to plant for the spring garden. In the Deep South, tomato and pepper seeds are already being started in the greenhouse, while our northern neighbors still have plenty of opportunity for cool-season crops like broccoli and cabbage.

Regardless of where you are, seed starting is a vital skill for the homesteading lifestyle. Saving seeds from the previous year’s crop makes for a truly self-sufficient gardener. To save seed, you must use open-pollinated, non-hybrid varieties. Another benefit of seed-saving is that the vegetable varieties you grow will become better adapted to your local environment year after year.

Starting seeds in a greenhouse is beneficial for “cole” crops such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, as they will get a quicker start in the controlled conditions of warmth and moisture. Starting tomato and pepper seeds in a greenhouse is essential for timely fruit production, since they take a long time to grow big enough for planting in the garden.

Rodale’s Organic Life has created a handy seed starting chart that you can fill out to determine when to start seeds and when to plant out in the garden, depending on your hardiness zone or average frost-free date. If you can’t find your frost-free date, call the local extension office.

“Print the seed starting chart below. Write your frost-free date in the blank space at the top of the chart. Get a calendar and add or subtract the number of weeks in the “Safe To Set Out Time” column. This is the “Setting Out Date.” It tells you when you can safely plant the crop in the garden. Write it in the last column. Take each date from Column 5 (“Setting Out Date”), subtract the number of weeks shown for that crop in column 3 (“Weeks from Sowing”) and record that date in column 2 (“When to Start Inside”).”

planting-chart

The materials for starting your own seed can be made at home. All you need are trays, containers, a potting medium, labels and marker, and the seeds.

Make sure that the seedlings get plenty of direct sun. A windowsill is usually not sufficient and will produce weak, leggy seedlings.

DIY Seed Tray

It is useful to have some type of tray to hold your containers. These can be made with wood from pallets or whatever is lying around, although it is best to avoid treated wood, so the chemicals don’t leach into your potting medium. A size of 12 inches by 24 inches will be easy to handle. The sides should be about 2 inches tall.

Fasten the four side pieces together with wood screws, and then screw the bottom pieces into the sides. Make sure to allow for drainage by leaving spaces between the bottom boards or drilling ¼ inch holes in the bottom.

DIY Seed Containers

For containers, you can use a variety of materials like milk cartons or small plastic containers with a hole poked in the bottom to allow for drainage. Newspaper pots are an excellent DIY choice.

To make newspaper pots, cut 4-inch strips of black-and-white newspaper. Wrap each band around the lower half of a jar or a can a few times, and secure it with a piece of tape or a flour-and-water paste. Then crease and fold the bottom of the newspaper around the bottom of the jar or dowel, and slip it off. Set the newspaper pots in your homemade tray, and when you fill with the potting medium they will support one another.

DIY Potting Medium

The potting medium must be loose and well-drained so the tiny roots can penetrate and spread out. The true homesteader will have a supply of good compost, which is an excellent choice for seed starting as well. Use screened compost and mix with perlite or vermiculite to achieve good drainage.

Finely ground pine bark or cotton gin waste can be used as an alternative to vermiculite, which will also serve to hold moisture. Rice hulls can be used as an alternative to perlite. Whatever you use, mix it about half and half with the screened compost.

The seed itself contains enough nutrients for seedlings to begin growth, so do not add fertilizer at first. After they develop their first true leaves, a weak fertilizer can be added, although compost will have everything needed until it is time to plant in the garden.

Moisten the potting medium before adding to the containers, and you are ready to begin sowing seeds. Small seeds like the cole crops and tomatoes and peppers are planted at a very shallow depth—only about ¼ inch deep. Plant two or three per container, and thin to one seedling after true leaves develop. Research the specific crops you will be sowing.

After the seeds are sown, moisten the soil again and cover the trays with plastic. Uncover as soon as you see the first seedlings appear. Don’t forget to label the containers with popsicle sticks or something similar, especially if you are growing different varieties of the same vegetable.

When the plants reach the appropriate size, harden them off and then plant according to the chart you have filled out. Enjoy the harvest to follow!

To Fight Racism, Oregon College Devotes an Entire Month to ‘Whiteness’-Shaming

By TheRundownLive

Matt Agorist | FreeThoughtProject

Portland, OR — The Cascade Campus Diversity Council at Portland Community College has just declared April to be one of the most unprecedented “educational projects” ever conceived — “Whiteness History Month.”

According to PCC, “Whiteness History Month: Context, Consequences, and Change is a multidisciplinary, district-wide, educational project examining race and racism through an exploration of the construction of whiteness, its origins, and heritage.”

In the opposite manner of “Black History Month,” Whiteness History Month will not be celebrating the contributions made throughout history by people with white skin, but rather shaming them.

“Whiteness History Month, unlike heritage months, is not a celebratory endeavor, it is an effort to change our campus climate,” the College points out on its website.

Peter Fricke, writing for Campus Reform, explains,

According to a sub-page defining the term (adapted from a definition developed by the University of Calgary), whiteness “does not simply refer to skin color[,] but [to] an ideology based on beliefs, values, behaviors, habits, and attitudes, which result in the unequal distribution of power and privilege based on skin color.”

Not only does the concept of whiteness allow those who are “socially deemed white” to accrue benefits, the page asserts, but those benefits “are accrued at the expense of people of color, namely in how people of color are systemically and prejudicially denied equal access to those material benefits.”

The ideology of whiteness, it continues, dates back to “at least the seventeenth century, [when] ‘white’ appeared as a legal term and social designator determining social and political rights,” a concept that eventually grew to include “thousands” of “special privileges and protections” for white citizens.

While there is no question that racism is alive and well in the United States today, attempting to solve the problem by creating a climate of ‘race shaming’ is like trying to put out a fire by throwing matches into it.

It is a statistical fact that black people are incarcerated at a higher rate, face heavier consequences for the same charges as their white counterparts, and are killed by police at a higher rate than whites.

As Ron Paul pointed out in the 2012 presidential debate,

“True racism in this country is in the judicial system. The percentage of people who use drugs are about the same with blacks and whites. And yet the blacks are arrested way disproportionately. They’re prosecuted and imprisoned way disproportionately, they get the death penalty way disproportionately. How many times have you seen a white rich person get the electric chair or get, you know, execution? If we truly want to be concerned about racism, you ought to look at a few of those issues and look at the drug laws, which are being so unfairly enforced.”

However, shaming your neighbor who has nothing to do with these things, simply because their skin color is white, will solve nothing. It will only serve to fuel the flames of the bigot class by stoking the divide even further.

Instead of teaching students to strive for greatness, no matter what, this “project” teaches them to be victims. Instead of focusing on the issue of the state’s role in perpetuating the racist ideology of a few people in positions of power, PCC is attempting to lay blame to an entire group of people — because of the varying levels of melatonin in their skin.

Racism is an immense part of the problem, but it is important that we point out that it is only part of the problem. The other part of this problem is the color blue, and the violent unaccountable leviathan that it represents in America today.

A racist idiot without a badge and uniform is simply a racist idiot, add the power of the state and that racist idiot lays waste to civil rights, initiates violence, and extorts the populace; and it’s called ‘justice.’

While the intentions of those behind “Whiteness History Month” are likely noble, they would do well to remember the famous words spoken by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Until we stop dwelling on the superficial qualities of our fellow humans, racism isn’t going anywhere — regardless of misdirected campaigns of shame.

Obama Instituted the ‘Greatest Transfer of Wealth in History’ to the 1%

By TheRundownLive

Thumbnail for 254165

Justin Gardner | FreeThoughtProject

If the presidency of Barack Obama teaches us anything, it should be that presidents are nothing but tools of the elite to concentrate wealth and power. It should teach us that the words Democrat and Republican are absolutely meaningless.

Columnist and editor for the NY Post, Michael Gray has a phrase to describe the time period of 2008 through 2015—The Great Fleecing. It was the continuation of a great game that has played out since the rise of consumerism, a collusion of corporations and government that has squeezed the Middle Class for everything it was worth.

The vast majority toils through cycles of boom and bust, while the 1% steadily reaps the benefits of a shadow economy that siphons wealth upward. The Great Recession never hurt the elite, and the supposed recovery never helped the rest of us.

“During [The Great Fleecing], the greatest transfer of wealth in the history of the world occurred. Some $4.5 trillion was given to Wall Street banks through its Quantitative Easing program, with the American people picking up the IOU.”

Instead of all that money going into real, tangible things like desperately needed infrastructure improvements, those trillions were sequestered in a crony system of banks and Wall St. investors, overseen by a cartel called the Federal Reserve.

It’s not difficult to believe that the Great Recession didn’t just happen by coincidence at the end of one president’s term when everyone was distracted by phony political debates. It would follow that the next president picked right up on the game.

After the 2008 election, Obamacare became the next massive distraction, keeping everyone in a state of phony debate while the Fed was doling out trillions to Wall St. banks and putting American taxpayers on the hook. And it just so happened that Obamacare became a windfall for another power player in the corporatocracy—the health insurance industry.

As Gray points out,

“the Obama administration is the first two-term presidency that has not posted a 3% GDP growth on an annualized basis for 8 years. Even Franklin Delano Roosevelt posted 3% growth year during the Great Depression.”

Jobs, wages, and the GDP took a back seat to the “too big to fail” Wall St. banks, because they couldn’t trust the plebes with all that money for fear of inflation. As a result, the various schemes these banks engaged in with the free money—including mortgage-backed securities, company mergers, company debt offerings, stock buybacks—did nothing but secure that wealth for the 1%.

“These actions are the reasons the American middle class has been decimated and no longer makes up the majority of the population…

The middle class has seen the wholesale export of good-paying jobs, while on the hook for crushing mortgages and higher taxes to pay down the growing US debt to fund the banks.”

The gap between rich and poor has widened more under Obama than under any other president.

Also, more than 50% of the populations in all U.S. counties are on some kind of government assistance. Meanwhile, Wall St. had a 7-year bonanza.

Now the bill is coming due for the American people, at the end of another presidency, as the nation will be distracted by another phony political debate. As the Fed winds down its injection of money manufactured on the backs of the working middle class, our retirement accounts will again bear the brunt of the fallout. The stock market appears poised for a freefall.

Indeed, $2.3 trillion has already been destroyed since the high last year, and $1.5 trillion in net wealth has vanished.

What will be the next trick up the sleeve of the banking cartel to fleece the sheep while maintaining the appearance of order? The fact is that they may not have one. As the Free Thought Project reported last week, even the mega banks are predicting a ‘cataclysmic’ collapse.

As the next president is being chosen to serve the desires of the 1%, they may be underestimating the power of alternative media and the age of instant information. Only by exposing the Great Fleecing can we break from its grip into a new era.

The FBI and Memphis Police Admit Their Involvement in the Assassination of MLK

By TheRundownLive

Andrew Emett | FreeThoughtProject

Nearly 50 years since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the FBI and Memphis Police Department have sparingly released information implicating themselves or members of their agencies in facilitating and directly causing the untimely death of Dr. King. Although the Justice Department officially claims James Earl Ray assassinated MLK, a civil suit later determined that a Memphis cop was involved in a conspiracy to murder the civil rights leader.

During a rainstorm on February 1, 1968, two black sanitation workers in Memphis lost their lives when the truck’s compactor accidentally triggered. On that same day, 22 black sewer workers were sent home without pay while their white coworkers received compensation. Less than two weeks later, over a thousand black sanitation workers went on strike wearing placards reading, “I AM A MAN.”

On March 18, 1968, Dr. King spoke at a rally in Memphis promising to lead a march later in the month supporting the striking sanitation workers. According to the House Select Committee on Assassinations, a black civil rights group named the Invaders sabotaged the March 28 demonstration by distributing hundreds of two by two sticks attached to placards into the hands of impressionable black children caught breaking store windows. The Invaders allegedly incited violence against Dr. King’s orders of peaceful resistance.

Because of the violence perpetrated during the March 28 demonstration, the city of Memphis filed a formal complaint against Dr. King and his associates within the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). On the last day of his life, Dr. King spent most of his time with Dr. Ralph Abernathy of the SCLC. While Rev. Andrew “Andy” Young of the SCLC had convinced U.S. District Court Judge Bailey Brown to allow Dr. King to organize a peaceful march scheduled for April 8, Dr. King was preparing for dinner with Rev. Samuel “Billy” Kyles.

On April 4, 1968, Dr. King’s Memphis PD security detail had been withdrawn, a black Memphis PD detective posted near the Lorraine Motel had been removed, and two black firemen in a station near the Lorraine Motel were transferred shortly before the assassination. Former Memphis PD Detective Jerry Williams had been assigned to Dr. King’s security detail twice before his final visit in 1968. Det. Williams asserted on Dr. King’s final visit that no black officers had been assigned to his security detail. The day before Dr. King’s death, Inspector Don H. Smith requested to remove his detail. The request was granted.

Accounts differ regarding Dr. King’s final words. According to FBI documents, Dr. King was discussing the weather with his chauffeur, Solomon Jones Jr., when the fatal shot struck. Rev. Jesse Jackson instead recalls Dr. King chastising him for not wearing a tie. Dr. King then turned to musician Ben Branch, who was standing beside Jackson, and said, “Make sure you play ‘Take My Hand, Precious Lord.’ Play it real pretty.” According to Jackson, those were his final words.

Since revealing its illegal COINTELPRO harassment of Dr. King and the existence of at least 5 paid informants who reported to their Memphis Field Office, the FBI also disclosed that Dr. King’s trusted friend and renowned photographer, Ernest Withers, had been secretly working as an FBI informant. In addition to the FBI informants, a black undercover Memphis PD officer named Marrell McCollough had infiltrated the Invaders in 1968. McCollough stood in the parking lot of the Lorraine Motel on the night Dr. King died. He claimed to have been the first person to reach the body.

Although the Invaders had been removed from the Lorraine Motel a few hours earlier, undercover MPD officer Marrell McCollough remained on the premises until Dr. King’s death. McCollough claimed he spent the day shopping with Rev. James Bevel and Rev. James Orange of the SCLC. Standing in the parking lot of the Lorraine Motel, McCollough witnessed Dr. King’s assassination then ran up the stairs to view the body. ABC News confirmed McCollough went on to join the CIA, and he later testified on March 12, 1978, to the House Select Committee on Assassinations.

While recalling Dr. King’s final moments, Rev. Billy Kyles who was standing beside Dr. King on the balcony admitted decades later, “Only as I moved away so he could have a clear shot, the shot rang out.” Kyles has denied working as an FBI informant, even though he was accused of being a confidential Memphis PD informant.

In 1999, civil trial King v. Jowers determined former Memphis PD officer Loyd Jowers had been complicit in a conspiracy to assassinate Dr. King. In December 1993, Jowers appeared on ABC’s Prime Time Live confessing to his participation in Dr. King’s assassination. Jowers admitted he believed MPD Lt. Earl Clark fired the shot that killed Dr. King, not James Earl Ray. Although the U.S. government claims that Jowers fabricated his allegations, they have also admitted responsibility in attempting to ruin Dr. King’s marriage and persuading him to commit suicide.

This twelve-minute video compilation gives an interesting overview of Trump’s many changing faces and contradictory political positions.

The truth comes out !

Posted by One World Voice on Saturday, December 12, 2015

Who is Donald Trump, and what ideals does he really support?

While the presidential candidate nominee has won over a large percent of America with his outlandish ideas (like building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico to stop illegal immigration), it seems most of what he proclaims, upon inspection, is actually a farce.

The video above, published by the non-profit foundation One World Voice, highlights the many faces of Donald Trump as well as his shifting political views.

From saying he supports his friends (citing Bill and Hillary Clinton as such) and then slandering them on live television, to saying he’s for gun control (then later changing his position to run for president), it seems the narcissist can’t even keep his own ‘truths’ straight.

Trump being a liar isn’t anything new, however. As was recently reported, when Politifact fact-checked Trump’s many statements, it was found that only 7% of what the presidential candidate nominee spouts is actually true.

In addition, Trump is a known con man, as Addicting Info reports. He’s been sued for fraud over everything from bogus real estate deals to his sham school, formerly known as Donald Trump University.

Is this really the man Americans believe can successfully transform the United States?

We’ll let you form your own opinion after watching the video above.

Please comment your thoughts below and share this important video.

Black Oregon Militiaman Bridges the Divide — Asks Black Lives Matter Activists to Join Them

Harney County, OR — As the standoff in Harney County continues, so do the calls for government violence as well as the support for the occupiers.

Whether or not you agree with the armed protesters at Malheur national wildlife refuge, calling for them to be ‘disemboweled’ or ‘mowed down’ by agents of the state is a horrible idea.

There is the notion that if these protesters were black, they would have already been killed, but, for the most part, that notion is false.

In September of 2011, hundreds of protesters took to New York City, erecting tents and breaking the city’s loitering laws. None of these protesters were killed despite many of them staying for months on end. Yes, some arrests were made, many of them horrifying and violent, but no one was ‘disemboweled’ or mowed down.

In Ferguson, Missouri, 2014 was a monumental year for raising awareness to police brutality. Outside of the riots, thousands of peaceful protesters gathered day in and day out. Many of these peaceful protesters were armed and black, yet they were not met with violence. At one point, the Free Thought Project’s Rebel Z, who was live streaming on location, documented the protesters storming the police station in an effort to take it over.

Doors stormed. Metro PD. #ferguson https://t.co/Udj1dRBCGs

— deray mckesson (@deray) December 31, 2014

Again, no one was killed — and this was a good thing.

Because of the location of these protests being in highly populated areas, the protesters, while not being killed, were certainly met with plenty of police violence. Gallons of pepper spray was blasted into the faces of countless protesters and media alike over the course of Occupy Wall St. and Ferguson.

Up until now, many argued that because the Oregon protesters were all white, they haven’t been killed or arrested. However, one of the occupiers, who’s been there since the beginning, spoke with the Guardian on Saturday, and he smashes this paradigm.

Brandon Davis, 31, is one of the several dozen protesters involved in the occupation of the wildlife refuge — and his skin color happens to be black.

For the first time since the occupation began, Davis has been interviewed by the media and what he has to say may cause some heads to explode.

Davis is encouraging Black Lives Matter activists to travel to Harney County to learn about the Constitution.

“I would encourage more black people to come here to get educated,” Dowd said on Saturday. “They could learn a lot being here and talking to these constitutional lawyers.”

According to the Guardian,

Dowd, who said he mentors youth, has been camped out at the refuge for about a week and frequently does armed security rotations. He rarely attends the militia’s daily press conferences, but decided to stand alongside leader LaVoy Finicum on Saturday morning, because he said he was passionate about Finicum’s complaints about the FBI allegedly spying on the occupiers.

Dowd said he was first inspired by Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy’s victorious standoff with the federal government over land-use rights in 2014. When he saw that Cliven’s son, Ammon, was leading a similar battle against the government in Oregon, Dowd decided he wanted to experience the protests in person.

“I just had enough of … seeing others being mistreated,” said Dowd, who grew up in Detroit. “I just felt like it was time for me to be a part of it.”

Dowd proposed a potential solution for Black Lives Matter activists that is similar to what the Oregon occupiers are trying. It’s called a “common law grand jury.”

The idea behind the common law grand jury is that locals can operate outside of the court system and hold corrupt government officials accountable.

Dowd told the Guardian that he would like to see the Black Lives Matter activists research the ‘grand jury’ model and apply it to the corrupt law enforcement in their areas.

“Go to the sheriff in your county, and if he is corrupt, then you need to raise a grand jury on your own and outline the documentation of the wrongdoing,” he said. “This is what this is about – finding a better way of doing things.”

“It’s time for our generation to wake up,” Dowd said as he encouraged more young adults to come out to the refuge. “I have to stay here until justice has prevailed,” he said.

As people use this standoff to promote their agendas on different sides of the political spectrum, the fact that police have yet to move in and initiate violence is not only something to be pointed out, but it should be praised. Cops not killing peaceful people, regardless of race, is a good thing.

New Research Says Marijuana Is 114 Times Safer Than Drinking Alcohol

By The Rundown Live

New Poll: Half Of Wisconsin's Registered Voters Support Full Legalization Of Marijuana

HigherPerspectives

If you were to ask law enforcement or the U.S. government, they’d tell you that marijuana is unsafe, addictive, and has no medical uses. Of course, any thinking person knows that’s a crock of you-know-what. And now, a new study has found that the controversial plant is 114 times less likely to harm you than alcohol. In fact, they found that booze was the deadliest drug of them all, with cocaine and heroin coming in second.

Related: Here’s What Marijuana Does To Broken Bones

“The results confirm that the risk of cannabis may have been overestimated in the past,” the study’s authors wrote. “At least for the endpoint of mortality, the [margin of exposure] for THC/cannabis in both individual and population-based assessments would be above safety thresholds (e.g. 100 for data based on animal experiments). In contrast, the risk of alcohol may have been commonly underestimated.”

When you think of carcinogenic substances, your mind probably goes to all things smoked, right? Well, one glossed over fact about alcohol is that it is a class A1 carcinogen – a confirmed causer of cancer in humans. Alcohol consumption has been tied to breast cancer for a long time now. It doesn’t matter the kind of alcohol. It all does it.

Marijuana advocates are welcoming the new study, hoping that it helps to drive public opinion toward total legalization. Currently, marijuana is legal in Colorado, Oregon, Alaska, and the District of Columbia. More states will likely join the list this November when Americans cast their ballot for the next president.

Marijuana remains illegal at the federal level.

Oath Keepers Warn Feds Not to “Waco” Oregon Occupation — or there Will be Civil War

By TheRundownLive

Thumbnail for 253898

Jay Syrmopoulos | FreeThoughtProject

Washinton, D.C. – A “critical warning” has been issued by Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes “to the entire U.S. military, but especially to the military Special Operations Command and community” with it secondarily being “addressed to federal LEOs, and especially to their SRTs, such as the FBI HRT (many of whom are former military special operations).”

The “warning” indicates that the escalation the situation in Oregon from a simple occupation of an empty federal building by ranchers and U.S. veterans to a use of force situation could risk pushing the nation into another civil war.

“If you do it ‘Waco’ style here, you risk pushing this nation over the edge into a Civil War, because there are “no more free Wacos,” Rhodes wrote.

Making a plea directly to the military and federal operators that would carry out such an order, the Oath Keepers make clear that this situation “must be handled as a normal, non-crisis, law enforcement matter, and preferably by Oregon Sheriffs (who are organized as the Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association), and their deputies, together with the local community there in Harney County, OR.”

Rhodes notes in his “Warning”:

This is not an emergency situation, unless you turn it into one. Ammon Bundy’s occupation of an empty building is essentially the same as civil-disobedience sit-ins that the political left has engaged in for decades, from anti-war and civil rights protesters in the 60s and 70s (including a nineteen month occupation of Alcatraz by American Indian activists), to Occupy Wall Street Movement and Black Lives Matter activists today.

These ranchers, cowboys, and veterans just happen to be armed, as westerners tend to be. Get over it. There are no hostages, there are no close-by neighbors at risk, there is nobody there except those who want to be.

Rhodes notes that the Obama administration previously considered using military force against the Bundy Ranch protesters under Directive No. 3025.18, “Defense Support of Civil Authorities,” as reported by the Washington Times. He also indicates that intelligence received by the organization suggests that forces within the Obama administration are considering using military assets and military rules of engagement to conduct a dynamic raid

“Despite that reality of there being no emergency here, we have very good reason to believe that ideologue leftist bureaucrats within the Obama Administration – such as within the D.O.J., and their politically minded “perfumed prince” puppets within the D.O.D. – are pressuring you to prepare to use military assets and military rules of engagement to conduct a dynamic raid. We are an organization of current serving and retired military, police, fire-fighters and other first responders, and we have contacts at every major military installation in America (including Joint Base Lewis-McChord), and at the Pentagon. We hear things. We’ll just leave it at that,” Rhodes wrote.

The Oath Keepers claim to be a non-partisan association of current and formerly serving military, police, and first responders, who pledge to fulfill the oath all military and police take to “defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”
